Soccer Saturday pundit Matt Le Tissier believes that a new manager could be the key to resurrecting Yaya Toure’s Manchester City career.
The Ivory Coast midfielder has attracted criticism for his role in City’s disappointing title defence, with Sunday’s Manchester derby defeat leaving them 12 points adrift of leaders Chelsea.
Manager Manuel Pellegrini has also had his future questioned, with Niall Quinn suggesting the Argentine’s “head is on the block” on Super Sunday, and Le Tissier feels that a new man at the helm could reinvigorate Toure.
He told Sky Sports: “It’s a strange one with Toure as he goes from being a world beater one week to looking like he doesn’t give two hoots and not really playing for the shirt the next.
“Maybe a new manager can inspire him as a person and as a player, then there’s a chance that they can get another good year out of him, but he hasn’t looked himself this season.”
However, Le Tissier feels that allowing Toure to leave could be the solution, if City can find a suitable replacement.
He added: “City will be looking at their homegrown player quota if they decide to cash in on Toure, which probably wouldn’t be a bad thing, but there’s not too many English midfielders that would strengthen them.
“Jordan Henderson and Michael Carrick are probably the best two in that position but wouldn’t move, while Fabian Delph wouldn’t really improve them.
“They might be able to prize Paul Pogba away from Juventus with a big enough offer but they need to be wary of their homegrown quota, which will be helped once they start reaping the rewards of the improvements to their academy.”
